This was Liverpool’s first competitive game since the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in July.

Outside Anfield, scarves, floral tributes, and murals honoured Jota. Inside the stadium, a profound silence set the tone, broken only by occasional sobs and the rustle of scarves.

Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool’s summer signing, opened the scoring in the 37th minute after a precise pass from Dominik Szoboszlai. Four minutes into the second half, Ekitike assisted Cody Gakpo, doubling Liverpool’s lead.

Bournemouth fought back with Antoine Semenyo scoring twice to level the game, though the celebrations were shadowed by reported racist abuse from a section of the crowd.

Officials quickly addressed the incident, and both clubs condemned the behavior.

Federico Chiesa’s late goal in the 88th minute restored Liverpool’s lead, followed by Mohamed Salah’s stoppage-time strike, an emotional tribute to Jota. Salah also set a new Premier League record, scoring in nine consecutive season openers.

The win highlighted Liverpool’s resilience and unity, combining skill, strategy, and heartfelt homage to a fallen teammate.
