Akwa United criticism: Super Eagles goalkeeper Sochima Victor defends the club, urging fans to consider team challenges beyond financial backing

Super Eagles goalkeeper Sochima Victor has defended Akwa United Football Club, amid growing criticism over the team’s recent struggles in the Nigeria National League (NNL).

The debate intensified after Akwa United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sporting Lagos in matchday five, leaving them sixth in the Southern Conference B table.

Social media users highlighted the club’s N45 million monthly allocation, questioning why the team had not been performing at a higher level compared to other clubs, such as Rangers International of Enugu, who operate on N22 million monthly.

Victor, responding to the criticism, stressed that financial resources do not automatically translate into victories.

Using top-funded teams like Kano Pillars as examples, he emphasised the importance of evaluating football objectively, free from emotional or tribal bias.

“So because of the allocation, they should be winning every match home and away, right? If that is the case, Kano Pillars are one of the highest-paying clubs with the biggest allocation in the country. Why are they not topping the NPFL? Judge football without emotions and tribalism… Every club has transitional and challenging periods irrespective of your past status, pedigree, titles and division,” Victor said.

Akwa United’s current record includes two wins, two losses, and one draw, with five goals scored and five conceded.

The club will now turn its focus to its upcoming match against Osun United in matchday six, aiming to climb the Southern Conference B table.

Victor’s remarks highlight the reality that financial backing alone cannot guarantee results, and underscore the broader context of team development and league competitiveness in Nigerian football.
