Senate plot to rig 2027 elections alleged by Dino Melaye following lawmakers’ rejection of electronic transmission of results

Former senator and legal practitioner, Dino Melaye, has accused the Nigerian Senate of plotting to rig the 2027 general elections following its reported rejection of electronic transmission of election results.

Mr Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, made the allegation in a statement issued on Friday, February 6, 2026, describing the Senate’s action as a deliberate attempt to undermine Nigeria’s electoral integrity.

The former lawmaker said the decision amounted to an endorsement of electoral malpractice and signalled a dangerous retreat from transparency ahead of the next election cycle.

According to Mr Melaye, electronic transmission of results remains a critical safeguard against manipulation, warning that its rejection creates fertile ground for fraud at collation centres across the country.

He argued that the move weakens public confidence in the democratic process and erodes trust in the ability of electoral institutions to deliver credible outcomes.

Mr Melaye further described the Senate’s action as a backward step for Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that technological safeguards were essential to protecting the will of voters in an increasingly complex electoral environment.

The former senator called on fellow lawmakers, civil society organisations, and citizens to resist what he characterised as a blatant attempt to compromise future elections.
