UNIJOS suspends exams after Plateau attack triggers tension in Jos North, with students advised to stay indoors for safety

The University of Jos in Plateau State, announced the suspension of examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday following heightened insecurity triggered by a deadly attack in Anguwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area.

The decision, which effectively pauses academic activities, comes in response to escalating tension in the area after suspected gunmen launched an attack on the Gari Ya Waye community, leaving multiple people feared dead and several others injured.

The incident, which occurred around 7:50 pm, sparked panic among residents as armed assailants reportedly stormed the community and opened fire indiscriminately.

Eyewitness accounts described scenes of chaos as residents fled for safety while gunshots rang through the area. The aftermath of the attack saw further unrest, with groups of angry youths reportedly blocking major roads and targeting motorcycle riders and passengers, worsening the already fragile security situation.

In a statement issued by the university’s Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, the management said the suspension of examinations was necessary to safeguard students and staff amid the deteriorating conditions.

The institution directed all members of its community to remain indoors where possible and to exercise caution in their movements.

Students and staff were also advised to stay vigilant, avoid unnecessary early morning travel, and promptly report any suspicious activity to the university’s security division.

The management added that it is working closely with security agencies to monitor developments and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to restore normalcy. It assured that updates regarding the rescheduling of examinations would be communicated in due course.
