FA heading ban under-11 introduced as England’s football body restricts heading for young players amid growing concerns over brain injury risks

The Football Association (FA) has introduced a significant new rule banning players under the age of 11 from heading the ball, following increasing concerns over the long-term effects of repeated head impacts on brain health.

FA youth heading rule for under-11s   policy forms part of wider efforts to reduce potential neurological risks associated with football, particularly at youth level where developing brains are more vulnerable.

According to reports, the decision follows growing scientific evidence suggesting that even small impacts from heading can create repeated stress on the brain over time, potentially increasing the risk of long-term damage.

A major study referenced in discussions around the rule change found that former professional footballers are approximately 3.5 times more likely to suffer from neurodegenerative diseases compared to the general population.

In response, the FA has also issued updated guidance aimed at limiting high-force headers during training sessions, especially those involving set-piece situations such as corners and free-kicks.

FA Chief Medical Officer Dr Charlotte Cowie described the move as part of an evolving approach based on emerging research, stressing the importance of continued scientific investigation into the issue.

“The results of the study have also been shared with FIFA and UEFA, and we continue to welcome a global approach to support further research in this important area,” she said.

The Scottish Football Association has already taken additional steps, introducing restrictions on heading in training on the day before and after professional matches.

Football authorities say the latest measures are designed to reduce risk while research continues, with growing calls for a coordinated international response to protect players at all levels of the game.
