Obidient Movement supports NLC call for minimum wage increase, urging Federal Government to address inflation and improve workers’ welfare

The Obidient Movement Worldwide on Friday, May 1, 2026, in Abuja, declared its support for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) demand for an upward review of the national minimum wage, urging the Federal Government to act swiftly to ease economic pressure on workers.

National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, made the position known in a Workers’ Day tribute, describing Nigerian workers as key drivers of the economy who continue to sustain national growth despite harsh economic conditions.

Yunusa Tanko said the current minimum wage of ₦70,000, introduced under the 2024 Act, has been eroded by inflation and rising living costs, making it inadequate for workers’ basic needs.

He referenced ongoing proposals by organised labour, which reportedly suggest an increase to ₦154,000, aimed at addressing the declining purchasing power of wages.

The Obidient Movement urged the Federal Government to implement the Nigeria Labour Congress proposal, stating that workers require urgent relief to cope with current economic realities.

Yunusa Tanko also criticised prevailing economic conditions, saying government policies have not created a favourable environment for productivity and job stability.

He cited labour data indicating that over 116 million Nigerians fall within the working-age population, while unemployment and business closures continue to rise.

According to him, many small and medium-scale enterprises have shut down due to economic pressures, leading to job losses and reduced household income across the country.

The Obidient leader called for improved welfare measures, including better working conditions, tax reliefs, housing support, healthcare benefits, and enhanced security for workers.

He also highlighted concerns over national debt levels, warning that rising debt servicing obligations could further strain economic stability.

Despite the challenges, Yunusa Tanko expressed optimism that targeted reforms and improved governance could restore economic balance and improve living standards.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, led by President Joe Ajaero, has continued to advocate for a “living wage,” arguing that inflation has significantly reduced the real value of workers’ earnings.

Organised labour maintains that wage reviews must reflect current economic realities to prevent further erosion of workers’ purchasing power.
