Osun NUJ Secretary Arrest sparks concern as Olalekan Akindoju is detained in Osogbo under unclear circumstances, prompting union intervention

Concern has intensified within media circles in Osun State following the reported arrest of Olalekan Akindoju, Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, who was taken into custody by police officers in Osogbo on Thursday morning.

Police arrest Osun NUJ secretary has triggered widespread anxiety among journalists after Akindoju was allegedly picked up from his residence and moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department, according to union officials.

The development was first confirmed by the Chairman of the NUJ in Osun State, Adeyemi Aboderin, who disclosed the incident in an official communication shared on the union’s internal WhatsApp platform.

Aboderin stated that policemen reportedly raided Akindoju’s apartment before whisking him away, adding that the union had yet to establish the exact reason for the arrest at the time of the initial report.

He later told journalists that efforts were ongoing to clarify the situation after contacting the Police Public Relations Officer, noting that the cause of detention remained unconfirmed.

Osun NUJ secretary taken into custody situation deepened concern when Daniel Odeyemi, Chairman of the Rave FM Chapel of the NUJ, confirmed that officers had arrived at Akindoju’s residence earlier in the day and taken him to the State CID.

Odeyemi said the station’s management had since visited the Osun State Police Command headquarters in an attempt to ascertain his whereabouts and secure clarity on the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

In a subsequent update, the NUJ leadership said Akindoju had been traced to the police PRU unit within the command headquarters, suggesting the possibility of a mistaken identity case.

Union officials described the development as deeply troubling but expressed optimism that the matter would be resolved swiftly, with efforts underway to secure his immediate release.

At the time of filing this report, the Osun State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement explaining the arrest or confirming the reasons behind the detention.
