Wike commissions Nigeria’s first solar-powered farmers’ market in Abuja, highlighting eco-friendly growth and food security in FCT

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commissioned Nigeria’s first evergreen solar-powered farmers’ market located in Utako, Abuja, describing the development as a major step towards economic expansion and sustainable urban growth in the capital city.

The new market, developed on 3,000 square metres of land, features 50 lock-up shops, 40 informal stalls, and seven warehouses. It is fully powered by renewable energy, underscoring the administration’s commitment to eco-friendly infrastructure.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Friday, Wike — represented by the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud — said the facility is more than a market; it is a hub of economic empowerment, agricultural excellence, and sustainable development.

“This initiative reflects our shared vision for a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economy—one that supports our local farmers, empowers small-scale agribusinesses, and ensures that quality produce is readily accessible to every resident of the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

Wike commended the leadership of Ambassador Maureen Tamuno, Group Managing Director/CEO of Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL), for her role in driving economic transformation within the FCT.

“This market is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved through public-private collaboration, strategic investment, and community-focused development,” he added.

In her remarks, Ambassador Tamuno lauded the FCT Minister for his “visionary and unwavering” support for transforming Abuja into a modern, globally competitive city.

“This project aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 11, promoting sustainable urban development that balances economic growth, environmental protection, and enhanced living standards,” she stated.

Tamuno noted that despite the high capital cost associated with solar infrastructure, AICL proceeded with the initiative to deliver a climate-conscious and functional space for farmers and traders.

She emphasised that the market will also play a key role in the agricultural value chain by facilitating direct farm-to-consumer transactions, reducing waste and bolstering food security — a major pillar of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

In their goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT and Ancillary Matters, Senator David Jimkuta, and the FCT Head of Service, Grace Adayilo, applauded the commitment of both Wike and Dr Mahmoud, as well as Ambassador Tamuno, to inclusive and sustainable economic development in the nation’s capital.
