A newborn baby was rescued alive from a bag left in a shop in Umuodu Village, Anambra State,Community members are ensuring the child’s safety
A newborn baby was found alive on Sunday morning in a bag outside a shop along Pope John Paul Seminary School Street, Umuodu Village, Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The baby was discovered at around 9:00 a.m. by a nurse, Mercy Iloanya, who noticed cries coming from the bag.
She immediately sought help from a passerby and alerted the shop owner where the baby had been left.
A note found with the baby indicated that the mother was seeking assistance for her child. “Good Samaritans quickly contributed baby items, while mostly women gasped in awe as they wondered why someone would do such a thing,” Iloanya said.
The child was later taken to the Anambra Police B Division before being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at the Mother and Child Department of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka.
This action was taken under the directive of the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.
Authorities have not disclosed the condition of the baby at the time of reporting but have assured that all necessary care is being provided.
The incident has prompted discussions on child welfare and community vigilance in Anambra State.
