Abia Farmers 2026 Rainfall alert: State govt and NiMET advise early planting, flood precautions, and crop timing for a productive farming season
Abia State Government and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency have issued the 2026 Climate Outlook and Agricultural Advisory, predicting above-normal rainfall for Abia State and advising farmers on measures to maximise crop yield and mitigate flooding risks.
Cliff Agbaeze, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, reported that annual rainfall is expected to range between 1,800mm and 2,200mm, with the rainy season commencing between late March and early April and lasting until late October or early November. The extended rainy season is expected to support multiple cropping cycles.
Peak rainfall months are projected in June and September, potentially heightening flood risks, particularly in low-lying areas.
Agbaeze advised farmers to cultivate raised ridges, maintain proper drainage, and avoid flood-prone lands for sensitive crops.
A short dry spell, commonly called the August Break, is anticipated between late July and August and may last two to three weeks.
Farmers are encouraged to plant early-maturing and drought-tolerant crops during this period, practice staggered planting, and avoid establishing sensitive crops.
Recommended crops include yam, maize, and cassava, which should be planted at the onset of rains in March and April, while rice should be sown between May and June.
Farmers are also urged to carry out regular field monitoring in June and July to prevent waterlogging.
The advisory aims to equip Abia farmers with actionable strategies to ensure a productive and resilient farming season despite unpredictable weather patterns.
