Adewole Adebayo says President Tinubu “messed up” electoral opportunities, criticizes his leadership and comments on Nigeria’s political system
Former 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has criticized President Bola Tinubu, stating that the president “messed up” opportunities available to him in electoral reforms and governance.
The Adewole Adebayo Tinubu messed up statement was made during an interview, where he responded to questions on Nigeria’s electoral process and political party primaries.
Adebayo argued that President Tinubu has not demonstrated the kind of bold leadership required to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.
According to him, the administration has mismanaged opportunities to improve electoral acts and deepen democratic reforms in the country.
However, he noted that Nigeria’s democracy should not depend on a single individual, stressing that institutions and citizens must continue to strengthen the system regardless of leadership shortcomings.
Adebayo also reflected on Nigeria’s political history, pointing out that the country has moved through colonial and military rule while still conducting elections and achieving democratic milestones.
The SDP chieftain further dismissed suggestions of political mergers involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that he remains committed to the SDP and has no plans to leave the party.
He described Nigerian politics as fluid, noting that many politicians frequently switch parties based on political advantage rather than ideology.
Adebayo also criticized the current political structure, suggesting that most parties share similar characteristics and are often driven by power rather than ideology or national interest.
His remarks add to ongoing national conversations about governance, electoral reform, and the direction of Nigeria’s democracy ahead of future elections.
