Akwa Ibom police UUTH assault denial as Command refutes claims of invasion, clarifying EFCC operation at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that its operatives invaded the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) and assaulted medical personnel during an incident in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Monday, May 12, 2026.

Akwa Ibom police refute UUTH assault claims was issued in a statement released via the official page of the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, who clarified that the operation in question was not carried out by police officers.

According to the statement, the operation at the hospital premises was conducted solely by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as part of a lawful assignment.

The Command explained that the Chief Medical Director of UUTH raised an alarm after armed men were seen within the hospital environment, prompting concerns over their identity and intentions.

Following the distress call, the hospital management reportedly ordered the closure of the main gates as a precautionary security measure to prevent any escalation.

The Commissioner of Police was subsequently said to have deployed officers to the facility to assess the situation and maintain public order, ensuring that no breakdown of law and order occurred.

Further clarification revealed that the individuals involved were later identified as EFCC operatives carrying out official duties within the hospital premises.

The Command stated that hospital authorities were advised to reopen the gates to allow the EFCC team to exit peacefully after the situation was clarified.

However, it alleged that the advice was not immediately followed, which contributed to rising tension within the area, including reports of stones being thrown at the operatives.

The statement maintained that police personnel did not take part in any assault, use of force, or teargas deployment against hospital staff, contrary to claims circulating on social media.

Describing the reports as misleading, the Command warned that such narratives could create unnecessary panic and distort public understanding of the incident.
