Anambra Kidnap Plot foiled as police rescue a victim and arrest 66-year-old Kenneth Nnaji over alleged links to a criminal syndicate

The Anambra State Police Command has foiled a suspected kidnap plot, rescued a victim and arrested 66-year-old Kenneth Nnaji over alleged involvement in a criminal syndicate accused of fraud and obtaining money under false pretences.

The operation was carried out by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, on July 11, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, who disclosed details of the incident in a statement on Tuesday.

The Anambra Kidnap Plot was reportedly uncovered during the operation, which also led to the arrest of Nnaji, who police said allegedly belonged to a three-man syndicate operating in Anambra and Enugu states.

Police alleged that the group specialised in elaborate deception schemes targeting unsuspecting members of the public.

According to the command, the suspects allegedly disguised themselves in branded overalls and caps while presenting themselves as representatives of recognised companies.

The police said the suspects allegedly collected goods from victims under the claim that they were needed as samples before directing them to another location where they promised larger quantities at discounted prices.

Investigators alleged that victims were later defrauded through the scheme.

Ikenga said Nnaji allegedly confessed during interrogation and provided information that could assist ongoing investigations into the activities of the syndicate.

“The suspect, during interrogation, allegedly confessed to his involvement in the criminal enterprise and provided useful information on the group’s modus operandi,” the police statement said.

The command identified other alleged members of the syndicate as Christopher, whose surname is yet to be confirmed, Jacob Musa, and Joseph, also with an unconfirmed surname. Police said the suspects are currently at large.

Authorities said efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects and recover proceeds allegedly linked to the criminal activities.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, directed investigators to conduct a comprehensive probe, apprehend all suspects connected to the case and ensure that anyone found culpable faces prosecution.

The commissioner also advised residents to remain cautious when dealing with individuals claiming to represent companies, urging members of the public to verify identities and credentials before entering business transactions.

Police said Nnaji would be charged to court after the completion of investigations.
