House Anti-Corruption Committee Chairman, Kayode Akiolu, emphasizes the necessity of strong collaboration among government agencies, civil society, media, and citizens to effectively combat corruption in Nigeria

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption, Mr. Kayode Akiolu, has asserted that a robust and collaborative effort is indispensable for the success of the anti-corruption campaign in Nigeria.

Akiolu made this statement at the ongoing three-day national anti-corruption conference being held in Uyo. He emphasized that tackling the pervasive issue of corruption effectively is unrealistic without the active participation of all critical stakeholders.

“No single individual or agency can fight corruption successfully,” Akiolu stated. “So there is need for synergy between government agencies, civil society, media, private sector and all Nigerians.”

The House Committee Chairman expressed his belief that through collective action and unwavering determination, Nigeria can develop effective frameworks that will empower the public to hold their leaders accountable.

“The National Assembly has shown enormous commitment in the campaign against corruption through laws, motions, oversights, among others,” he noted.

“It has continued to ensure that the processes that govern public service is not just efficient, but open and transparent.”

However, Akiolu pointed out that the anti-corruption and transparency units established within various government agencies and departments have not performed up to expectations.

He identified inadequate resources, lack of capacity, and insufficient political will as key factors contributing to the underperformance of these crucial units.

Akiolu’s remarks underscore the widely recognized need for a multi-pronged approach to combat corruption in Nigeria, emphasizing that a united front involving all segments of society is essential for achieving meaningful progress.
