Argentina World Cup Defence Challenge highlighted as coach Lionel Scaloni warns retaining the World Cup will be difficult despite strong form

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has admitted that defending the FIFA World Cup title will be a formidable challenge, as the reigning champions prepare to begin their campaign against Algeria on June 17.

Argentina World Cup title defence task comes three and a half years after La Albiceleste lifted the trophy in Qatar following a dramatic penalty shootout victory over France to secure their third world title.

Since that triumph, Scaloni’s side has maintained impressive consistency, suffering only four defeats across friendlies, the 2024 Copa America and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, while recording a string of strong victories in recent outings.

Their most recent performance, a commanding 3-0 win over Iceland, underlined their excellent form heading into the tournament and helped push Argentina to the top of the latest FIFA rankings.

However, despite the positive momentum, Scaloni struck a cautious tone when reflecting on the difficulty of retaining the trophy, stressing the competitive nature of international football at the highest level.

He acknowledged that winning back-to-back World Cups is an arduous task, while insisting his squad will approach the tournament with full commitment and determination.

In a measured but determined statement, Scaloni said the team would “give everything on the pitch” and continue to fight throughout the competition.

Argentina have been drawn in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria and Jordan, as they aim to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title.

Despite their strong form, statistical models currently place Argentina among the top contenders rather than outright favourites, reflecting the intensity of competition expected in North America.
