Mikel Arteta reaches 250 Premier League games with Arsenal, recording 151 wins and a 60.4% win rate to rank fourth among elite managers

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reached 250 Premier League games in charge of the club during Monday’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park, becoming one of only a select group of managers to reach the milestone at a single English top-flight club.

Bukayo Saka’s 59th-minute goal secured Arsenal’s victory and maintained the Gunners’ perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.

According to BBC Sport, Arteta’s record after 250 league matches stands at 151 victories, 48 draws and 51 defeats, giving the Spaniard an impressive 60.4 per cent win rate.

That figure places Arteta fourth among managers who have taken charge of at least 250 Premier League matches at one club.

Only former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, with a 70.8 per cent win rate, Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson, with 65.2 per cent, and former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, with 62.6 per cent, rank above him.

The milestone provided an additional reason for Arsenal supporters to celebrate after the hard-fought victory in Birmingham.

At the final whistle, travelling Arsenal fans chanted Arteta’s name as the manager acknowledged the significance of the occasion.

“I’m extremely grateful. It starts to be a big number!” Arteta said after the match.

“So I’m really grateful for all the support, the love that I feel from all of them, and yeah, really great to celebrate with a win.”

The victory was particularly satisfying for Arteta because of Arsenal’s painful experience at Villa Park last season.

Arsenal had lost at the same venue last season with what Arteta described as the “last kick of the game”, making Monday’s result a measure of improvement as well as an important three points.

“I’m extremely happy. It’s a really tough place to come and win,” Arteta said.

The Arsenal manager credited his entire squad for the result, describing the performance as a “squad victory” after every player contributed to the win.

Arteta was particularly pleased with Arsenal’s improvement in the final third, an area he had identified as requiring greater precision and ruthlessness.

“We’ve been wanting that need in the final third to find the openings and to be more clinical and finish more actions,” he said.

“I’m really pleased because that’s exactly what we need.”

The victory also extended Arsenal’s impressive record in opening away league matches.

The Gunners have now won their opening away Premier League fixture in each of the last five seasons, underlining their growing consistency on the road.

For Arteta, however, the 250-game landmark represents more than a statistical achievement.

Since taking charge of Arsenal in December 2019, the former Arsenal midfielder has overseen the club’s transition from an inconsistent side into a sustained Premier League title challenger.

His tenure has included domestic silverware, European success and repeated challenges for the Premier League title, while Arsenal have gradually established themselves among England’s leading clubs.

Monday’s victory also strengthened the club’s early position in the new campaign, with Arsenal securing six points from their opening two matches.

Villa, meanwhile, endured another frustrating outing under former Arsenal manager Unai Emery.

The defeat leaves Aston Villa without a shot on target in the Premier League this season, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing Emery’s team in the opening weeks of the campaign.

For Arteta, the focus now turns away from the milestone and towards maintaining Arsenal’s strong start.
