Balogun Adisa Ridwan, a Nigerian man declared dead in Ukraine, is alive after capture by Ukrainian forces; he was misled into military service while seeking work
A Nigerian man, Balogun Adisa Ridwan, previously reported dead in Ukraine, has been found alive after being captured by Ukrainian forces near Lyman, Donetsk.
Balogun had traveled to Russia seeking civilian employment but was allegedly misled into military service in Ukraine.
He was listed among Nigerians allegedly killed in combat, including Adam Anas, Akinlawon Tunde Kuyum, and Abugu Stanley Onyeka.
He recounted signing documents in a language he didn’t understand and being sent to fight unexpectedly. Upon encountering Ukrainian troops, he and another recruit surrendered immediately.
Balogun praised the humane treatment he received in custody, including food, shelter, and clothing.
Balogun is now seeking permission to return to Nigeria, emphasizing that his intentions were purely to find work abroad and feed his family.
He appealed to the Nigerian government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for forgiveness.
