Bayelsa United top-nine target set by coach Meremu Okara as the team seeks climb after 1-0 victory over Rivers United in NPFL
Bayelsa United head coach Meremu Okara has set a clear target of finishing among the top nine in the Nigeria Premier Football League this season, following a narrow 1-0 victory over South-South rivals, Rivers United.
The win lifted the Prosperity Boys to 14th position on the league table, but they remain just one point above the relegation zone.
Okara expressed confidence that his side can rise into the top half before the season concludes.
“I would like the team to end the season among the top nine — I mean above 10th position, say from ninth going up the ladder. That’s what we’re pursuing,” he said after Sunday’s game.
The victory was secured through a tightly contested match, with Bayelsa United maintaining defensive discipline and capitalising on a key opportunity to claim all three points.
Looking ahead, the Yenagoa-based club will travel to face Kun Khalifat FC this weekend in a crucial encounter that could further boost their climb up the NPFL standings.
Okara’s ambition reflects a strategic push to consolidate league position and build momentum for the remaining fixtures, emphasising discipline, teamwork, and consistency.
