Renewed violence in Apa Local Government Area has left two residents dead and reportedly involved the sexual assault of two women.
The attacks occurred on Sunday in the communities of Edikwu G’Icho, Ole-G’ijamu, and Ukpogo, allegedly by armed herders.
One of the victims was a pastor ambushed while returning from church. The women victims were taken to a medical facility and are currently receiving care.
Local youths in Oiji acted quickly to repel the attackers, preventing further escalation. Confirming the incident, Adams Ocheiga reported that the attacks occurred at Edikwu Ward 11 and that Oiji was targeted but defended successfully.
Recurring attacks by suspected herders have recently affected several areas in Benue, including Kwande, Otukpo, Ohinmini, Logo, and Guma.
Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
