Borno electric buses transport initiative launches with subsidised fares to ease fuel cost impact and improve mobility in Maiduguri

Borno State Government has deployed 20 electric buses for public transportation to reduce the impact of rising petrol prices, as part of a broader mobility and green energy initiative announced by spokesperson to the governor, Mr Dauda Illiya.

The programme includes 17 buses with 49 seats, two with 37 seats, and one 28-seater, all designed to provide efficient and affordable transit across the state capital and surrounding areas.

Dauda Illiya said the fully air-conditioned buses can travel over 400 kilometres on a single charge, offering a cost-effective alternative to fuel-powered transport.

The rollout, which began on April 3, is focused on key routes within Maiduguri metropolis, where commuters have faced increasing transportation challenges due to fuel price hikes.

The initiative builds on an earlier intervention inaugurated by Bola Ahmed Tinubu in December 2025, which included the distribution of electric bicycles, tricycles, and vehicles to enhance mobility in the state.

To support operations, Governor Babagana Zulum has established what officials describe as the country’s largest electric vehicle charging terminal, with capacity to charge up to 50 vehicles simultaneously.

The scheme also features heavily subsidised fares, with the Borno Express Transport Service directed to maintain a flat rate of N50 per trip to shield residents from economic pressure.

Dauda Illiya noted that early feedback from commuters has been positive, with reports of reduced congestion and improved access to affordable transportation.

He added that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to modernising transport infrastructure, promoting clean energy, and delivering relief to vulnerable residents.

The deployment marks a significant step in the state’s transition towards sustainable mobility while addressing immediate economic challenges facing commuters.
