NCDC alerts Nigerians on Cerebrospinal Meningitis as dry season peaks, urging vaccination, early detection, and preventive measures

Director-General of the NCDC, Jide Idris, said the agency is closely monitoring the situation, particularly in states within the African meningitis belt, where dry and dusty conditions, overcrowding, and poor ventilation significantly increase transmission risks.

“Cases of meningitis typically rise between December and April. Early detection and prompt treatment are critical to saving lives,” Idris said, noting that the NCDC is conducting nationwide surveillance and strengthening laboratory capacity for faster confirmation of suspected cases.

Understanding the Disease

Cerebrospinal Meningitis affects the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord and is most commonly caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis.

Dr. Idris warned that bacterial meningitis can become fatal within hours if untreated but stressed that timely diagnosis and antibiotics significantly improve survival rates.

The infection spreads through respiratory droplets during close contact, especially in crowded and poorly ventilated spaces.

Recognising Symptoms

Health authorities highlighted that early detection is key.

Common symptoms include sudden high fever, severe headache, and neck stiffness, with nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, confusion, seizures, or altered consciousness as additional warning signs.

Infants and young children may also display irritability, refusal to feed, excessive sleepiness, or a bulging soft spot on the head.

Idris cautioned that symptoms of fever and headache during the dry season should not automatically be assumed to be malaria.

High-Risk Groups and Preventive Measures

The NCDC identified children, young adults, people in crowded environments, those exposed to dry and dusty conditions, and individuals with weakened immune systems as particularly vulnerable.

Schools, universities, boarding facilities, religious centres, internally displaced persons camps, and correctional facilities were urged to maintain proper ventilation and report suspected cases immediately.

Authorities advised against self-medication or reliance on herbal remedies, encouraging anyone with symptoms to seek prompt medical care.

Vaccination and Public Health Response

Dr. Idris encouraged eligible Nigerians to receive meningitis vaccines and participate in reactive vaccination campaigns led by state health authorities.

The NCDC plans to continue monitoring disease trends, support laboratory confirmations, deploy rapid response teams, strengthen treatment capacity, and intensify public awareness initiatives.

“Anyone experiencing fever, neck stiffness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms should seek urgent medical care. Early treatment can mean the difference between recovery and life-threatening complications,” Idris said.

The approval, which adopts the Federal Government’s Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), is aimed at improving the welfare of health workers and strengthening healthcare delivery in the state.

The development follows an earlier increase by the state government to bring the salaries of medical personnel in Zamfara in line with those of their counterparts in the Federal Government.

With the new approval, a health worker currently earning ₦100,000 will now take home ₦195,000, while someone on ₦200,000 will earn ₦390,000. A worker on ₦300,000 will now receive ₦585,000, and those on ₦500,000 and ₦1,000,000 will earn ₦975,000 and ₦1,950,000 respectively.

In effect, the 95 percent increase means the existing salary of every affected health worker is almost doubled.

The approval is expected to boost morale, attract and retain qualified health professionals, and ultimately improve healthcare delivery across the state.

It also comes shortly after the state government recruited new health workers last week, with the newly engaged staff set to benefit from the new salary structure.

Health workers in the state have since expressed appreciation to Governor Lawal for the gesture, describing it as a major boost to the sector.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers and the delivery of quality healthcare services to the people of Zamfara State.
