Cross River girlfriend murder case shocks residents as man allegedly kills partner over infidelity claim; police launch investigation in Ogoja
A middle-aged man identified as Malime Ejor, aged 35, has been arrested after allegedly killing his girlfriend, Moshie Igu, aged 26, over suspected infidelity in Nwang Village, Ekajuk community of Ogoja Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria, on Saturday at about 0600hrs.
Local sources said the tragic incident occurred during a heated confrontation between the couple, which escalated into violence at a farm location in the early hours of the day.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the argument reportedly began over accusations of extramarital affairs before the suspect allegedly attacked the victim with a machete, leading to her death.
One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the scene as distressing and said villagers were unable to intervene in time to prevent the fatal attack.
“We heard the commotion and rushed to the scene, but we could not stop him,” the resident said, adding that youths in the community later apprehended the suspect and handed him over to security operatives.
The Cross River girlfriend murder case has since sparked outrage among residents, who have called for justice and stronger measures to address domestic violence in rural communities.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the suspect is currently in custody while a full investigation is underway.
He explained that police operatives visited the scene immediately after receiving the report and ensured the suspect was rescued from mob action by angry youths.
According to him, the victim’s remains had not yet been deposited at the General Hospital Mortuary in Ogoja, as arrangements were still being concluded at the time of the report.
ASP Eitokpah added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet and thorough investigation.
The incident adds to a growing number of reported cases of intimate partner violence across Nigeria, including a similar case reported in Ibadan earlier in March involving the death of a young woman.
