Details Of Pastor Bakare's Meeting With Buhari Emerges

The founder of Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare on Friday has a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Bakare’s closed-door meeting focused on support for the electronic transmission of votes in the 2023 elections, power rotation and to “dispense what was in my heart”

2023 Election: Power Rotation

Bakare stated, “I had said it on October 3. It’s our immaturity, politically and otherwise, that makes us say power must either be in the North or be in the South, instead of looking for the best, the fittest, the most competent, and people of character, who love this nation.

“Listen to me, if where the president comes from will make the place he has come from to be better, the northern part of Nigeria should be the richest and should be the most progressive and the most developed because out of 61 years, the north has produced either the president or heads of state for 40 to 41 years, and yet see the retrogression in the North.

“If it’s from the South, why should a person like President Obasanjo freeze and seize the account of Lagos State in his own tenure? If it’s from South-South or South-East why couldn’t President Jonathan use all his powers to develop South-South/South-East?

“Not where they come from, it’s what they carry and what they have to offer. May the best of the best of Nigerians rise, whether they’re from the east, from the west, from the north, and from the south.

“If there are agreements between politicians among themselves on rotation, a bargain is a bargain. That’s between them. But as far as this country is concerned, what we need at this stage is a man who can drive us to the Eldorado.”

He also said that there is the need for the nation to adopt electronic voting to ensure that no Nigerian of eligible voting age including the Diasporas are disenfranchised.

Asked about his mission at the presidential villa, Bakare said, “It’s a private visit to His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, and I’ve dispensed what’s in my heart.”

Electronic transmission of election results

He applauded the Senate for reversing itself on the electronic transmission of election results, saying beyond that, the country should also adopt electronic voting.

Reacting to the senate’s stance, the Clergyman said, “Perhaps one of the best things the present National Assembly has done, especially the Senate. Because with that, Nigerians can vote and then results can be transmitted so easily. Not only that, part of the State of the Nation address that I did on October 10, I emphasised how Nigeria’s youth, especially undergraduates, are disenfranchised in our country.

“22.3 million students are registered, but during election, campuses are shut, they will not be able to return there to vote, therefore disenfranchised. If we can also be able to vote electronically, that will be wonderful. It will deepen and enhance our democracy.

“Not only that, the Diaspora sends above $25 billion to Nigeria. Nigeria in Diaspora should also be able to vote as they do in every other country in the world. The more the merrier. Yes, democracy is a game of numbers, but our people should have the final say, so the office of the citizen must be as important, if not more than the office of the governor or the president because they are the people who put them in power. Sovereignty still lies in the hands of the people of Nigeria.”

Restructuring of Nigeria

Bakare affirmed that it’s a step that must be taken to move the nation forward, “I’d said it, it’s in the open, the documents are already there, it’s not something I can cover in five minutes. We can do it without shooting any gun. The lecture after lecture after lecture, I have prepared and I’ve made copies available to Mr. President.

“We need to do it, to move this nation forward. The founding fathers of this nation; Sir Ahmadu Bello, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa, alongside their entourage in Lancaster House and everywhere, agreed on what type of government Nigeria should have. We must not change the goalpost in the midst of the game.

“We are better off together as a nation than going our different ways. But it must be based on equity, justice, fair play and a rule of law.”

On plans to contest for the 2023 presidential election

When asked if he had plans to contest the 2023 presidential election, he said he would, only if God and Nigerians want him to.

Bakare added, “Every Nigerian, who is of age and who is not disqualified by any means, is free. I’m a nation builder, if God wants me to do that, and the people of Nigeria will appreciate that, why not? I’m as free as anybody to do anything with my time. I’ve pastored a church for 33 years, now we raise new leaders. I want to focus on nation-building.

“The Office of the President is only one office, there are so many other things we can do as people to support whoever is there to make sure that we do not go into retrogression, but begin to make steady progress as a people. I’ve already communicated clearly, my future plans to Mr. President, and it stays between us.”

The Heir Apparent: Hamzat and the Politics of Lagos Continuity

On October 30, at the unveiling of his governorship manifesto, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat received the endorsement every political aspirant in Lagos covets. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, standing before party leaders and supporters, declared that he had come not to offer goodwill messages but “to testify.”
The declaration was more than a show of solidarity. For Hamzat, who has occupied the second position in Lagos State since 2019, it represented a public affirmation of his long-awaited political ambition and a symbolic passing of the baton from his principal.
With the endorsement, Hamzat’s emergence as the All Progressives Congress ,APC candidate for the 2027 governorship election appears to have consolidated a carefully managed succession. If elected, he would become the first deputy governor in Lagos State’s history to succeed his principal directly as governor.
A long wait, repaid
Hamzat’s journey to the governorship ticket has been marked by ambition, setbacks and strategic patience. In 2015, he contested the APC governorship primary against Akinwunmi Ambode but lost. Three years later, he stepped aside for Sanwo-Olu, who secured the party’s nomination and subsequently won the election.
That decision is now widely regarded by his supporters as evidence of loyalty and political maturity. His reward has come through a succession process that gathered momentum this year.
In April, President Bola Tinubu endorsed Hamzat as the consensus candidate during a meeting with the Lagos Governance Advisory Council, the party’s influential leadership body. The council cited the need for peace, cohesion and continuity.
Hamzat subsequently won the APC primary with 657,917 votes, becoming the first deputy governor in Lagos to secure the party’s governorship ticket. In June, Sanwo-Olu formally unveiled him alongside his running mate, .
Consensus and its discontents
Yet the smoothness of Hamzat’s emergence has raised questions about the place of internal competition in the party’s democratic process.
Several aspirants had expressed interest in the ticket, including former governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, who joined the APC after contesting the 2023 governorship election on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party.
Some aspirants reportedly purchased nomination forms before party leaders settled on Hamzat, while groups in Badagry Division called for the ticket to be zoned to their area.
The party maintained that its procedures had been respected. Sanwo-Olu also argued that consensus endorsement did not negate democratic processes. Nevertheless, the extent to which the arrangement reflected genuine unity or the influence of party leadership remains a subject of political debate.
Experience as a selling point
Sanwo-Olu’s argument for his deputy rests largely on experience and continuity. Lagos, he maintains, is too complex to be entrusted to a political novice.
The governor has pointed to major infrastructure projects, including rail expansion and the proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge, as initiatives requiring consistent leadership and long-term planning.
Hamzat’s manifesto, organised around seven pillars and a 100-point plan, promises improvements in transportation, healthcare, housing and public services. He has pledged an inclusive and economically vibrant Lagos, promising that traders, artisans, transport workers, young people, professionals and investors will have a place in his administration.
The campaign, led by Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has adopted the slogan “Lagos Forward Together.”
Lagos remains the political home of President Tinubu, and APC leaders have linked the 2027 governorship contest to the party’s broader electoral ambitions.
Ultimately, Hamzat enters the race with formidable institutional backing. But the real test will extend beyond party structures and political endorsements.
For Lagosians, the question is whether continuity under a familiar leadership can translate into tangible improvements in their lives. Hamzat has secured the baton. Convincing voters that he can carry it forward is the challenge that lies ahead.

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, has expressed confidence in Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, to deliver on the commitments in his manifesto, themed The Lagos P.R.O.M.I.S.E (Ileri Eko).

Obasa spoke on the sidelines of the formal manifesto presentation held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts (formerly the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu), Lagos, on Friday, October 30.

The Lagos P.R.O.M.I.S.E (People First, Renewal, Opportunity, Machinery of Government, Inclusion, Security and Resilience, and Everyday Dignity) prioritises continuity and accountability. It outlines Hamzat’s priorities across key sectors, including transportation, environmental resilience, housing, security, healthcare, education and economic opportunity, while emphasising measurable outcomes and people-centred governance.

Describing the manifesto as a thoughtful and practical blueprint that reflects a robust understanding of Lagos State’s opportunities and challenges, Obasa commended the intellectual rigour and clear vision that went into its formulation.

He referenced Hamzat’s educational background, wealth of experience in private and public offices, and broad exposure as factors that equip him to deliver on the promises.

“For someone with his rare accretion of insight, experience, education, and exposure, I do not doubt that Dr Hamzat will sustain and build upon the developmental trajectory of Lagos State.

“He has the competence, character, and most importantly, the determination to rewrite the Lagos State socio-economic narrative,” Obasa said.

The Speaker added that Lagosians are in for a new kind of experience in governance, as Hamzat has presented a document with timelines against which his administration can be held accountable.
