EPL discriminatory abuse investigation launched after alleged crowd abuse during Sunderland’s 2-1 derby win over Newcastle United

The English Premier League (EPL) has launched an urgent investigation into an alleged discriminatory abuse incident during Sunderland’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, on Sunday, 2026, following reports that a Sunderland player was targeted by abuse from the stands.

The EPL discriminatory abuse investigation was triggered after match officials activated the league’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol in the second half of the fiercely contested Tyne-Wear derby, temporarily halting play after concerns were raised regarding crowd behaviour.

According to the Premier League, the stoppage occurred after an alleged incident involving Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, with the match briefly paused while officials and security personnel assessed the situation in line with established safeguarding procedures.

Brian Brobbey sealed the win with a 90th-minute goal, capping an intense and emotionally charged encounter.
