Éric Sékou Chelle, head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, guided the national team to a thrilling semi-final at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations before their campaign ended on penalties against hosts Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Chelle’s tactical acumen and methodical approach have reinvigorated a team long searching for identity and consistency.

Under the Franco-Malian coach, Nigeria entered the semi-finals unbeaten in regulation time, scoring a tournament-high 14 goals and conceding just four.

Former Nigeria international Ben Duamlong described Chelle’s work as a masterclass in calm leadership, noting that results often mask the underlying transformation a coach brings.

“Coach Chelle has instilled clarity and cohesion in the Super Eagles,” said former assistant coach Manu Garba.

“The players are coordinated, motivated, and committed. They are performing at their best, and it shows on the pitch.”

Nigeria’s semi-final clash with Morocco was a showcase of discipline and collective resolve.

Former midfielder Sani Kaita praised the tactical balance achieved by Chelle’s side, emphasising their fearless attacking style combined with intelligent defensive organisation.

Morocco ultimately prevailed in a tense penalty shootout, but Nigeria’s performance reinforced the nation’s belief in their coach’s vision.

Striker Victor Osimhen and midfielder Alex Iwobi highlighted the transformation Chelle has driven within the squad.

Osimhen noted that Chelle knows when to unlock the team’s attacking potential, while Iwobi emphasised the renewed sense of unity and family spirit that permeates the camp.

Former assistant coach Usman Abd’Allah urged patience, acknowledging that Nigeria’s tactical maturity will grow over time.

“Winning AFCON should not be the sole yardstick,” he said.

“Chelle is building a team capable of long-term success, and the semi-final demonstrated their potential.”

Interest in Chelle’s abilities has surged across the continent, but former Nigeria international Jide Olugbodi urged the Nigeria Football Federation to secure his continued leadership.

With 11 wins in 17 matches and only a single loss in regulation time under his tenure, Chelle has established Nigeria as a formidable force once again.

Even Morocco’s head coach, Walid Regragui, praised the Nigerian side: “I congratulate the Nigerian team and Coach Éric Chelle for the great work they have done.”

For Chelle, the semi-final defeat is less a setback than a statement: the Super Eagles now possess direction, discipline, and a renewed identity under his quiet yet transformative leadership.
