Former Nigerian Army Major General Umaru Mohammed has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court after the Court of Appeal upheld his conviction for misappropriating funds

A former Major General in the Nigerian Army, Umaru Mohammed, has taken his appeal to the Supreme Court after the Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld his conviction for misappropriating funds belonging to Nigerian Army Properties Limited.

Mohammed was convicted on October 10, 2023, by a Special Court Martial for stealing and criminal misappropriation, sentenced to imprisonment, dismissed from the Army, and ordered to refund $2,099,700 and N1,650,172,000.

Dissatisfied, he approached the Court of Appeal in February 2025, arguing insufficient and unreliable evidence supported his conviction.

The three-member appellate panel dismissed his appeal, affirming the Special Court Martial’s verdict on all counts except forgery. The forgery convictions were set aside due to exceeding the three-year limitation period under Section 169(1)(a) of the Armed Forces Act.

In a statement, Mohammed described his trial as unfair and confirmed that he has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court to nullify the Special Court Martial judgment and challenge part of the Court of Appeal’s ruling.

He also questioned the Army’s enforcement of certain orders tied to his Bank Verification Number, claiming the court martial did not issue such directives.

The case highlights ongoing scrutiny over military accountability and the legal process for high-ranking officers in Nigeria.
