Fani-Kayode ADC criticism as the ambassador calls the party discredited and divided, arguing Nigeria’s opposition lacks cohesion and direction

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Femi Fani-Kayode, on Thursday, March 27, 2026, launched a sharp critique of the African Democratic Congress, describing its members as discredited individuals driven by desperation for political power and lacking the cohesion required to function as an effective opposition.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page, Fani-Kayode dismissed the African Democratic Congress as a credible political force, arguing that the party has failed to demonstrate the unity and strategic direction necessary to challenge the ruling establishment.

His comments add to ongoing debates about the strength and relevance of opposition parties in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Fani-Kayode, a former Aviation Minister, stated that opposition parties in the country have, in his view, collapsed due to persistent internal disagreements and a lack of coordination.

He suggested that rather than presenting a united front, many opposition figures are engaged in internal disputes that undermine their ability to hold the government accountable.

He criticised what he described as widespread infighting among opposition actors, arguing that such divisions weaken their effectiveness and diminish public confidence in their ability to provide meaningful alternatives.

According to him, the absence of unity has left the opposition unable to perform its constitutional role of scrutiny and balance.

In his remarks, Fani-Kayode maintained that the African Democratic Congress does not function as a genuine opposition party but rather as a collection of individuals pursuing personal ambitions.

He further argued that without internal discipline and a shared vision, the party and similar political groups would struggle to influence national discourse or policy direction.

His comments are likely to spark further reactions within political circles, particularly among members of the African Democratic Congress, as well as observers who continue to assess the evolving dynamics of opposition politics in Nigeria ahead of future elections.
