Fatal Ogun Crash claims three lives and injures three others on Sagamu-Benin Expressway as authorities blame dangerous traffic violations
A fatal Ogun crash on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, along the Sagamu-Benin Expressway near Babcock Junction in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, claimed the lives of three people and left three others seriously injured after a Mercedes-Benz truck collided with a crane.
The incident, which occurred at about 5:00 a.m., involved a white Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number LG 59 BLF and a yellow crane operating without a registration number, according to the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE).
TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the crash in a statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta, saying preliminary findings indicated that the crane was travelling against traffic at excessive speed before the collision.
“The crash involved six persons, comprising three males and three females. A total of three persons, comprising two males and one female, lost their lives, while three male victims sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Akinbiyi said.
Emergency responders, including TRACE officials, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police, arrived at the scene alongside another rescue team identified as “Papa Oscar” to provide assistance and manage the situation.
The injured victims were taken to Babcock University Teaching Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of those who died were deposited at the morgue of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu.
Following the crash, traffic management officials diverted vehicles from Delabo Junction to the second carriageway to reduce congestion and allow rescue teams to remove the damaged vehicles from the road.
Akinbiyi expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged motorists to avoid dangerous practices, particularly driving against traffic, commonly known as “one-way” driving.
“Motorists should avoid route violation and driving against traffic, considering the grave consequences associated with such dangerous acts,” he warned.
Road safety authorities have repeatedly raised concerns over reckless driving, wrong-way movements and speeding as major contributors to fatal crashes across Nigerian highways.
The latest incident adds to ongoing calls for stronger compliance with traffic regulations and increased caution among road users.
