Femi Azeez makes Super Eagles debut history with a brace in a 2-0 win over Zimbabwe, becoming the 62nd player to score on debut
Femi Azeez made history on Tuesday night in Abuja, Nigeria, after becoming the 62nd player to score on debut for the Super Eagles in their 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe, a performance that also etched his name into the national team’s record books.
Millwall winger delivered a stunning performance for the Super Eagles in the Unity Cup fixture, scoring twice in the opening stages of the match under head coach Éric Chelle.
Azeez opened the scoring in the fifth minute before doubling Nigeria’s advantage shortly after the hour mark, sealing a memorable debut display.
His achievement places him among a select group of players, including Finidi George, Julius Aghahowa, Obafemi Martins, Joe Aribo and Bryan Idowu, who have also scored on their first appearance for the national team.
Femi Azeez Super Eagles debut performance was further highlighted by the fact that he became the first player in 55 years to score a brace on debut for Nigeria.
The last player to achieve the feat was Mathias Obianika, who scored twice in Nigeria’s 4-0 win over Burkina Faso in November 1971.
Only five players in total have ever scored a double on debut for the Super Eagles, a list that includes Friday Okoh, Patrick Noquapor, Abudu Buraimoh and Obianika.
The result and Azeez’s landmark performance are expected to boost competition within the Super Eagles squad as the team continues its Unity Cup campaign.
