Fenerbahce petition Osimhen derby ban as they challenge his protective mask use ahead of Istanbul derby against Galatasaray
Fenerbahce have submitted a formal petition to the Turkish Football Federation seeking to restrict Victor Osimhen from featuring in the Istanbul derby against Galatasaray, according to reports on Thursday, 23 April 2026, ahead of one of the most decisive fixtures in the Turkish Super League season.
The highly anticipated derby is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 26 April 2026, at Rams Park, with both clubs locked in a tight title race separated by just four points and only a few matches remaining in the campaign.
Osimhen, who recently returned from a fractured arm sustained during Galatasaray’s UEFA Champions League defeat to Liverpool, has been playing with protective equipment since undergoing surgery.
His recovery had been closely managed to ensure he would be available for the crucial fixture.
However, Fenerbahce are now challenging his participation, arguing that the protective mask and related equipment could pose a risk to opposing players during physical contact.
According to Turkish media reports, the club has asked the federation to review whether the protective gear complies with IFAB regulations, with their medical department also preparing supporting documentation.
The petition comes just as Osimhen has been working his way back to full fitness, having made a brief appearance in the Turkish Cup and gradually increasing his involvement in Galatasaray’s matchday squads.
The Super Eagles forward has been a central figure in Galatasaray’s title push, and his availability for the derby is seen as a major boost for the club’s attacking options.
Galatasaray, meanwhile, are expected to resist any attempt to restrict the striker’s participation, viewing his return as a key factor in their pursuit of a fourth consecutive league title.
The Turkish Football Federation is yet to issue an official response, while attention continues to build around what is shaping up to be a high-pressure and politically charged encounter.
