FG rejects claims Nigeria is collapsing, with Minister Mohammed Idris citing security gains, economic reforms, and improved investor confidence

The Federal Government on Wednesday, 2026, in Abuja rejected claims that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse, insisting that the country is recording steady progress in addressing its security and economic challenges amid rising public concerns.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the position known at the 81st General Assembly and 23rd Annual General Meeting of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, where he dismissed what he described as pessimistic narratives about the nation’s future.

Idris stated that Nigeria remains resilient despite its difficulties, stressing that ongoing reforms and coordinated security operations are gradually producing measurable results across affected regions.

“I want to unequivocally refute the insinuation that Nigeria is on the brink,” he said, adding that the government is tackling security and economic issues more decisively.

The FG Rejects Nigeria Collapse Claim response comes amid criticism from civil society organisations that have raised concerns over insecurity, economic hardship, and governance challenges across the country.

The minister cited intensified military operations and improved intelligence-sharing as key factors behind recent gains, noting that criminal networks are being weakened and large-scale insurgent control has reduced significantly in parts of the country.

On the economy, Idris highlighted improvements in foreign reserves, revenue generation, and fiscal reforms aimed at strengthening transparency and stabilising public finances.

He also referenced Nigeria’s reclassification as a Frontier Market by FTSE Russell, describing it as evidence of growing investor confidence and improved market conditions.

According to him, the development reflects enhanced foreign exchange liquidity, increased transparency, and improved capital repatriation processes.

Idris urged broadcasters to uphold professionalism and avoid amplifying narratives that could deepen national divisions, especially as the country approaches another election cycle.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to press freedom while calling for stronger collaboration between the media and public institutions to counter misinformation and promote national unity.
