FG to immortalise Nigerian soldiers killed in Liberia, Sierra Leone
The Federal Government has pledged to immortalise Nigerian soldiers who died during peacekeeping operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone, assuring that efforts to document their sacrifices and preserve the history of the ECOMOG mission would be completed.
The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), gave the assurance on Friday when he received a delegation of ECOMOG veterans led by Maj. Gen. Ohifeme Ejimai (retd.), at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
This was contained in a statement issued by the minister’s media aide, Leah Katung-Babatunde.
Musa acknowledged Nigeria’s human and financial contributions to the operations, particularly the personnel who lost their lives, adding that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
He said the ministry would complete efforts to document outstanding records, casualties and historical assets associated with ECOMOG to preserve its legacy for future generations.
Earlier, Ejimai briefed the minister on the veterans’ activities and the condition of surviving Nigerian personnel who served under the regional force.
He urged the ministry to address gaps in ECOMOG’s historical records and consider designating a remembrance day to honour the hundreds of Nigerian troops who died during the operations.
Established by the Economic Community of West African States in 1990, ECOMOG participated in peacekeeping and peace enforcement operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone during periods of conflict.
