Nigeria international Frank Onyeka made an immediate impact on his debut for Coventry City, earning praise from manager Frank Lampard after their 3-1 Championship victory over Middlesbrough.
The 28-year-old midfielder, who joined the Sky Blues on transfer deadline day from Brentford, was deployed alongside Matt Grimes, providing energy, solidity, and composure in the centre of the pitch.
Onyeka’s pressing, ball recovery, and ability to drive forward were key to Coventry’s dominant display.
Lampard described Onyeka as “outstanding,” highlighting his visibility on the ball, intelligence, and ability to cover ground quickly.
“He did great. His pressing, his break up, and quality on the ball were all impressive. He reads the game and moves fast. Players of his level lift the team,” Lampard said.
Onyeka played 75 minutes before being substituted for Victor Torp due to fatigue, having had limited game time at Brentford this season.
Lampard stressed that his impact remained high despite the early withdrawal.
The midfielder is on loan with an obligation to make the move permanent should Coventry secure promotion, and his performance reinforced Lampard’s view of him as a unique addition to the squad.
