FRSC personnel promotion gives 7,472 officers and marshals new ranks, with Shehu Mohammed urging greater professionalism and responsibility
The Federal Road Safety Corps, led by Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, on Friday, August 21, 2026, in Abuja, approved the FRSC personnel promotion of 7,472 officers and marshals nationwide as part of efforts to strengthen professionalism, leadership and road safety operations across Nigeria.
The beneficiaries comprise 2,134 officers and 5,338 marshals, with the Corps describing the exercise as recognition for dedication, competence, discipline and years of service.
The decision comes as the FRSC continues to place greater emphasis on developing its workforce alongside its enforcement, technology and public safety initiatives.
In a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, Heads of Departments, Corps Officers, Heads of Special Units and Commanding Officers were directed to decorate the newly promoted personnel between Wednesday, August 26 and Friday, August 28, 2026.
For Shehu Mohammed, however, the new ranks represent more than career advancement. They also bring greater expectations.
“Every new rank must translate into a higher level of professionalism, accountability, leadership and service delivery,” Mohammed said.
The Corps Marshal urged the beneficiaries to regard their promotion as a call to greater responsibility and to justify the confidence placed in them by the FRSC, the Federal Government and the Nigerian public.
He also stressed that the effectiveness of the road safety agency depends not only on patrol vehicles, technology and enforcement structures, but fundamentally on the quality and commitment of its personnel.
The latest exercise follows a separate, technology-driven 2026 promotion process conducted earlier in the year, during which 10,005 FRSC personnel sat for promotion examinations.
That exercise involved 3,597 intermediate-rank officers and 6,408 junior officers, with digital systems deployed to improve transparency and accessibility.
The earlier exercise also allowed eligible personnel undertaking academic or professional programmes abroad to participate remotely, while observers from government institutions monitored aspects of the process.
The distinction between personnel sitting for promotion examinations and those ultimately approved for promotion is significant.
The FRSC previously clarified that participation in the examination did not automatically guarantee advancement.
The latest promotion therefore forms part of a broader personnel-development agenda under Mohammed, who has repeatedly linked staff development with stronger institutional performance.
The Corps has simultaneously remained heavily engaged in frontline road safety operations.
Earlier this month, the FRSC deployed 2,500 personnel and 50 operational vehicles for traffic management and emergency response during the Osun State governorship election. The deployment included seven heavy-duty tow trucks and six ambulances.
That operation highlighted the breadth of responsibilities carried by FRSC personnel beyond routine traffic enforcement, including emergency response, traffic control and support for orderly movement during major national events.
Mohammed has urged the newly promoted officers and marshals to maintain discipline both on and off the road, treat members of the public with dignity and protect the integrity of the Corps.
“Do more, lead better and serve with greater distinction,” he told the beneficiaries.
The message comes against the backdrop of Nigeria’s continuing road safety challenges, where effective enforcement depends heavily on the professionalism and judgement of personnel working directly with motorists and other road users.
The FRSC was established in 1988 and later given a statutory foundation through the Federal Road Safety Commission (Establishment) Act 2007.
Its mandate has evolved alongside Nigeria’s expanding transport network and the growing need for coordinated road safety management.
With the new promotions, the Corps is seeking to reinforce that institutional capacity by rewarding service while placing greater responsibility on those moving into higher ranks.
The newly promoted personnel are expected to assume their responsibilities with renewed commitment as the FRSC continues its drive towards a more professional, accountable and effective road safety service nationwide.
The Corps congratulated all 7,472 beneficiaries and reminded them that advancement in rank should ultimately be measured by the quality of service delivered to Nigerians.
