Gbenga Daniel hails Adebutu after his installation as Gbademu of Owu Kingdom, describing the honour as recognition of his service and commitment

Former Ogun State Governor and Senator, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has congratulated Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu after Adebutu was installed as Gbademu of Owu Kingdom in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The chieftaincy title was conferred on Adebutu by the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Saka Adelola Matemilola, Oluyalo Otileta VII, during a ceremony at the monarch’s palace in Abeokuta. Adebutu’s wife, Adenike Omolola Adebutu, was also honoured as Yeye Gbademu of Owu Kingdom.

Daniel, who holds the traditional title of Aare Ajibosin of Owu Kingdom, described the conferment as a fitting recognition of Adebutu’s contributions to his community and Ogun State.

In a congratulatory message personally signed by Daniel, the former governor said the new title reflected Adebutu’s character, commitment and record of service.

Daniel expressed confidence that Adebutu would bring the same dedication and sense of responsibility associated with his public life to his new traditional role.

The former governor and his wife, Yeye Olufunke Daniel, also congratulated Adenike Adebutu on her installation as Yeye Gbademu.

The dual honour, according to Daniel, represented not only recognition but also a fresh responsibility for the couple to contribute to the development and unity of Owu Kingdom.

Adebutu, who is also the PDP’s 2027 governorship candidate in Ogun State, said the title was particularly meaningful because of his family’s longstanding ties to Abeokuta.

“This is not just a title; it is a call to service. Together, we will continue to support the growth and development of our people and contribute positively to the progress of Owu Kingdom,” Adebutu said.

He pledged to use the position to support development beyond Owu Kingdom, extending his commitment to Egba and Ogun State more broadly.

“We will use this title to bring development, not only to Owu Kingdom, but also to Egba and Ogun State at large,” Adebutu said, describing the honour as a responsibility to justify the confidence placed in him.

Oba Matemilola also urged the newly installed Gbademu and Yeye Gbademu to work towards the development of Owu Kingdom and Ogun State. The monarch presented certificates to the couple during the ceremony.

The installation attracted traditional rulers, political figures, family members and other prominent guests.

Among those associated with the ceremony was former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, who was represented by his wife, Funso Amosun.

The new title adds another traditional distinction to Adebutu’s public profile as he prepares for the 2027 Ogun governorship contest.

His political career has included representing Remo North, Sagamu and Ikenne federal constituency in the House of Representatives and serving as the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Ogun election.

For the Owu traditional institution, the conferment also reflects its continuing practice of recognising individuals considered to have contributed to community development and public service.

The Owu Kingdom’s official records identify Oba Saka Adelola Matemilola as the current Olowu of Owu Kingdom and the 14th monarch of the kingdom in Abeokuta.

Daniel’s congratulatory message therefore comes at a significant moment for Adebutu, combining a traditional honour with renewed political activity ahead of the 2027 election.

The aircraft, which had five crew members and 20 passengers on board, was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the NAF 931 aircraft crash occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026. Search-and-rescue operations were immediately activated following the accident.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the incident as a deeply painful moment for the Nigerian Air Force and the country, while extending condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of those who died.

Aneke assured the bereaved families of the Nigerian Air Force’s full support as they come to terms with the loss.

The Air Force said no survivors had been found and released the names of the five crew members and 20 passengers on board the aircraft.

The crew members were identified as Squadron Leader M.I. Aburime, Flight Captain; Squadron Leader A.P. Man-Ugwueje, Co-pilot; Flight Lieutenant I.S. Bako, Co-pilot; Warrant Officer A. Abubakar, Aircraft Technician; and Corporal H.C. Uguru, Aircraft Technician.

The 20 passengers were Flight Lieutenant T.L. Lazarus; Flight Lieutenant M. Akinloye; Flying Officer I.M. Adeshina; Master Warrant Officer F. Onwuka; Master Warrant Officer B.A. Matini; Warrant Officer F.S. Nuhu; Flight Sergeant R.B. James; Flight Sergeant A.I. Mohammed; Sergeant A.E. Ani; Sergeant S.I. Izibenikien; Sergeant C. The latest figure released by the Air Force differs from the initial information provided after the crash. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo had initially said 32 people, comprising 25 passengers and seven crew members, were aboard the aircraft. The Nigerian Air Force subsequently clarified that the manifest contained 25 people, made up of five crew members and 20 passengers.

The aircraft crashed in a swampy area around Igbokoda, close to a naval base, after air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 9:13am while it was travelling from Benin to Lagos. The wreckage was later located and rescue teams were deployed to the area.

The cause of the crash has not been established. The Chief of the Air Staff has directed a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.

President Bola Tinubu had also directed the Nigerian Air Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the crash and declared three days of national mourning for the personnel who died. He ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast throughout the country in honour of the victims.

The Air Force said it would continue to provide timely and verified information as the investigation progresses. It also urged members of the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information, while respecting the privacy and dignity of the affected families.

A condolence register has been opened at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force in Abuja for senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, heads of security agencies and other well-wishers who wish to pay their respects and convey messages of sympathy to the families of the deceased and the Nigerian Air Force.
