Ekiye, known as the “Prince of the Niger Delta,” made the disclosure on Thursday, August 20, 2026, in a Facebook statement, explaining that he had waited a year before speaking publicly about the separation.

The singer, who married Kunemofa in 1998, did not disclose the circumstances surrounding the breakdown of the marriage.

Instead, Ekiye said he deliberately kept the matter private while allowing time for reflection and emotional clarity.

“After 28 years of a deeply personal journey of growth, experience and reflection, I wish to announce, with a profound sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that my marriage to Kunemofa Asu has come to an end,” Ekiye said.

The announcement brings an important personal development into the public domain after the couple spent nearly three decades together and raised four children.

Ekiye said the decision to make the disclosure a year after the marriage ended was intentional. He indicated that he wanted to approach the matter with perspective rather than make a public announcement while emotions were still unsettled.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this marriage ended a year ago,” he said, adding that he had allowed time to bring “perspective, clarity and quiet acceptance” to the transition.

He also struck a conciliatory tone in describing the next stage of his life.

“I choose to close this chapter with grace, gratitude and dignity, while looking ahead to the possibilities of a new season,” the gospel singer said.

The announcement is particularly notable because Ekiye had previously spoken publicly about the qualities that drew him to Kunemofa.

In a 2018 interview, he recalled that their relationship developed without the conventional dating process. He said their connection was shaped by shared aspirations, spirituality, intellectual compatibility and mutual attraction.

Ekiye also recalled proposing to Kunemofa on the street. According to his account at the time, she reacted enthusiastically but eventually accepted the proposal two weeks later.

The singer had described her as embodying qualities he valued in a life partner, including spirituality, intelligence, enterprise and a strong maternal disposition.

Their marriage subsequently became a family of six, with four children born during the union.

Ekiye’s personal announcement comes against the backdrop of a long career in Nigerian gospel music. He rose to prominence following the release of his 2001 album Woekilemo, establishing himself as a recognised voice within the country’s gospel scene.

His catalogue has included songs such as Eniye, Dey by My Side, Seiyo, Miyebibo, Kareyo, featuring gospel singer Eben, as well as Ebikamo and Yemiyemo.

Throughout his career, Ekiye’s public identity has been closely associated with his Christian faith, music and family life, making the confirmation of the separation a significant personal development for his audience.

However, the singer has offered no details suggesting that the announcement is intended to open a wider discussion about the circumstances of the separation.

For now, Ekiye’s message remains centred on acceptance and moving forward. His decision to speak a year after the marriage ended reflects an apparent desire to handle a deeply personal matter with restraint, while signalling that he is ready to embrace what he calls a “new season.”
