Harry Maguire reaffirms elite defender claim, reflecting on criticism, resilience, and ambitions with Manchester United and England

Harry Maguire, the Manchester United and England defender, has reaffirmed his belief that he remains “arguably one of the best defenders in the world,” as he reflected on a turbulent career marked by intense scrutiny, personal resilience, and a recent revival in form.

Speaking at Manchester United’s training camp in Maynooth, Ireland, Maguire opened up on the most challenging moments of his career, including the backlash he faced following England’s friendly against Scotland in September 2023, where he scored an own goal after coming on as a substitute.

He described the episode as one of the lowest points of his professional journey, though he insisted such experiences form part of a broader path of growth.

The defender acknowledged that the criticism extended beyond the pitch, affecting his family and prompting emotional reactions from those closest to him.

He revealed that his mother had publicly defended him during that period, highlighting the personal toll that high-level professional football can take.

Despite the setbacks, Maguire said he has developed a stronger mentality and a renewed sense of belief.

He emphasised that enduring criticism has ultimately contributed to his development, both mentally and professionally, shaping him into a more resilient player.

Maguire’s comments come shortly after he signed a contract extension with Manchester United, securing his place at the club for at least another season.

The extension marks a notable turnaround following a period in which he lost the captaincy and was linked with a potential departure from Old Trafford.

Reflecting on that phase, Maguire admitted that the initial reaction to losing the armband under manager Erik ten Hag was one of disappointment and frustration.

However, he stressed that ups and downs are an inherent part of a footballer’s career, particularly at the highest level.

He drew inspiration from former club legends such as Wayne Rooney and David Beckham, noting that even the most celebrated players have faced criticism during their careers.

In his view, perseverance and self-belief are essential qualities for overcoming public scrutiny.

Maguire also suggested that his improved performances and growing consistency reflect both personal determination and a commitment to maintaining high standards.

He added that his form would have returned regardless of his leadership status, indicating confidence in his long-term abilities.

Looking ahead, the defender emphasised the importance of strengthening the Manchester United squad to remain competitive in domestic and European competitions.

He warned that rivals continue to pose a serious threat, urging consistency and focus as the season progresses.

Beyond club ambitions, Maguire is targeting inclusion in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, which he believes could represent his final appearance at the tournament.

Having missed recent international opportunities due to injury, he remains determined to contribute if selected.

With renewed confidence and a steady run of performances, Maguire believes both his personal trajectory and Manchester United’s prospects are on an upward path.
