President Tinubu approves the Ibom Deep Sea Port in principle, raising hopes of new investment, jobs and economic growth in Akwa Ibom
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved in principle the establishment of the long-awaited Ibom Deep Sea Port in Akwa Ibom State, raising hopes for a major boost to economic activity in the South-South region.
Tinubu announced the approval while addressing an All Progressives Congress rally at the 30,000-capacity Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The announcement followed a request by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, who appealed to the President to support the project on behalf of the people.
The proposed deep seaport is expected to unlock Akwa Ibom’s maritime and industrial potential, while creating opportunities for investment, employment and international trade.
Beyond the state, the project is expected to serve as an important economic asset for the wider South-South region and Nigeria by strengthening maritime infrastructure and expanding the country’s capacity to participate in international commerce.
The approval in principle marks a significant development for a project that has remained a major aspiration for Akwa Ibom over several years.
However, the President’s announcement does not, on its own, establish a construction timetable or confirm the project’s financing and implementation arrangements.
Further details will be needed to clarify the next steps towards turning the proposed port into an operational facility.
