Imo Communities Stage Positive Protest Over Insecurity Surge
Imo communities protest insecurity in Owerri West, calling for urgent action over rising kidnappings, killings and attacks linked to herder activities
Residents of Ezi-Obodo, Ezi-Okele and Ihiagwa communities in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest over what they described as a worsening wave of insecurity in the area.

The communities protest against insecurity, Owerri West action saw youths, women, elders and community leaders march through major roads, carrying placards and demanding urgent intervention from security agencies and the state government.
The demonstrators expressed concern over repeated cases of kidnappings and killings allegedly linked to criminal elements operating within surrounding forests and bush paths in the area.
Speaking during the protest, Councillor representing Eziobodo/Ezi Okele Ward 5, Chijioke Echendu, condemned the incidents, describing the situation as one of the most serious security challenges faced by the communities in recent times.
Echendu called on security agencies to intensify operations in the affected areas, noting that residents are increasingly exposed to danger along key routes connecting the communities.
He also dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that about 40 people were killed in Eziobodo, describing the claims as false and capable of inciting panic among residents.
According to him, while there have been isolated incidents of kidnapping and attacks within parts of Owerri West, the situation does not amount to a full-scale invasion of the community.
He further explained that joint patrols involving local vigilante groups and police operatives have continued in efforts to improve security within the area.
The councillor cited recent incidents, including the reported kidnapping of an okada rider and passenger near the Federal University of Technology Owerri back gate, as well as another attack in which a woman and her daughter were abducted while travelling between communities.
He added that during one of the attacks, a commercial motorcyclist was allegedly shot and later died at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, while several others sustained injuries.
In response, the Imo State Police Command confirmed the deployment of security operatives to the area, noting that tactical units, including the Violent Crime Response Unit, have been placed on increased patrol duties.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security hotlines as efforts continue to restore calm.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing into the series of reported attacks across the affected communities.
