Residents of Umunobo, Nkwu-Emeke, and Akalovu said the armed group, numbering eight, was spotted emerging from nearby bushes early Wednesday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, the men, who were seen bearing AK-47 rifles and wearing face coverings, moved in the direction of the villages in what appeared to be a coordinated entry.

The sighting caused widespread alarm, with villagers reportedly fleeing or staying indoors for fear of attack. However, the Imo State Police Command has moved to allay fears and has assured the public that the situation is under control.

Police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, had swiftly ordered the deployment of divisional police officers from Owerri Urban, New Owerri, and Owerri North to secure the area.

In addition, a joint patrol comprising the Special Intervention Squad and personnel from the Nigerian Army was also dispatched to the location.

“There is no cause for alarm as the situation is under control,” Okoye said. “We have an adequate security presence. We appeal to the people to go about their lawful business, as their safety is guaranteed.”

Despite these assurances, residents remain cautious, citing past incidents and the rising tension between herders and local farmers over land use and safety concerns.
