Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen’s error helps PSG claim 5-2 victory in Champions League last-16 first leg
Chelsea FC’s UEFA Champions League ambitions were dealt a significant blow as Paris Saint‑Germain surged to a commanding 5-2 victory in the first leg of their last-16 tie at Parc des Princes on Wednesday, courtesy of a costly mistake from Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen.
Despite holding their own for large portions of the match, Chelsea’s resistance crumbled in the closing stages after Jørgensen’s error allowed PSG to take the lead, triggering a late scoring spree.
Manager Liam Rosenior’s decision to start Jørgensen over first-choice Robert Sánchez proved pivotal in the outcome.
The game remained competitive for more than an hour.
Chelsea twice came from behind after goals from Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé had put PSG ahead.
Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernández each struck for the visitors to restore parity at 1-1 and 2-2 respectively, giving hope for a potential upset.
The match turned decisively in the 74th minute when Jørgensen’s attempted pass from the back was intercepted by Barcola.
The move developed quickly as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia set up Vitinha, who lobbed the ball over the stranded goalkeeper to restore PSG’s advantage.
Chelsea’s frustration grew in the final stages, with winger Pedro Neto narrowly avoiding a red card after shoving a ballboy, and Kvaratskhelia adding two further goals to complete the 5-2 victory.
Captain Enzo Fernández openly displayed his frustration toward Jørgensen following another shaky clearance that led to a disallowed PSG goal.
Earlier in the match, Jørgensen had made several crucial saves, and Rosenior had chosen him partly for his ability to play from the back.
Nevertheless, the late error overshadowed Chelsea’s spirited performance and highlighted defensive frailties within the youthful side.
PSG’s opening goal arrived in the 10th minute via a Barcola finish, set up by João Neves. Dembélé’s low strike soon doubled the lead, but Chelsea responded through Gusto and Fernández.
Neto’s clever assist kept the tie level at 2-2 before Jørgensen’s mistake swung momentum irreversibly in favour of the French champions.
Chelsea now face a daunting task to overturn a three-goal deficit when the return leg takes place at Stamford Bridge next week.
