The Village Head of Kurmin Wali, Ishaku Dan’azumi, disclosed the ransom demand on Monday night.

The abduction occurred on Sunday, January 17, 2026, during church services in Iburu District, Kajuru LGA.

The attackers targeted Cherubim and Seraphim Church 1 and 2, as well as the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA).

Dan’azumi said the bandits accused the community of stealing 17 motorcycles allegedly lost during military operations in the area.

“They said Kurmin Wali must pay ₦250 million and provide 20 motorcycles before the worshippers are released,” he said.

He added that the attackers also accused residents of removing parts from the remaining motorcycles.

Nine days after the attack, more than 100 worshippers are reportedly still in captivity.

A security source said the abductors are allegedly using the victims as human shields to deter military airstrikes.

“Their location has been identified, and security agencies are working round the clock,” the source said.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the abduction happened during church services.

Attempts to reach the Kaduna State Police Command for further comment were unsuccessful as of press time.

Meanwhile, Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has visited the affected community and assured residents of the government’s commitment to rescuing the victims.

He said the protection of lives and property remains a top priority of his administration.
