Kano State rural electrification gets a boost as 500 electricity transformers are distributed across 44 LGAs to support underserved communities and local growth
Kano State has launched a major initiative to boost access to electricity in underserved areas with the distribution of 500 transformers across all 44 local government areas.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the rollout during a ceremony at the Rural Electricity Board on Maganda Road, Kano.
The transformers, ranging from 200KVA to 500KVA, were procured from international manufacturers and mark the first phase of a broader rural electrification plan. The kano state rural electrification project is a collaboration between the state government and local councils.
Governor Yusuf said, “Today’s ceremony marks another milestone in fulfilling one of our campaign promises for the good people of Kano State, especially rural communities that have been deprived of access to electricity for quite a long time.”
He described electricity as a foundation for economic development, improved education, healthcare, and better quality of life. The governor urged communities to protect the equipment from vandalism and to take ownership of the infrastructure to ensure longevity.
In addition, the state-owned electricity company has begun evacuating power from the 10-megawatt Tiga Hydropower Generation Plant to strengthen the local grid.
Yusuf added that more alternative energy projects would soon follow to support small and medium-sized businesses across Kano.
Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, AbdulKadir Abdulsalam, called the transformer distribution a “milestone achievement” that would directly benefit schools, markets, homes, and places of worship.
Hajiya Sa’adu Yusha’u, Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Kano, praised the project’s positive impact on community stability and economic activity.
Emir of Karaye, Alhaji Muhammad Maharaz, also endorsed the development, saying it brings relief to rural residents.
The kano state rural electrification drive reflects the administration’s commitment to equitable development. By improving electricity access through strategic infrastructure investments, Kano is positioning its communities for lasting growth and resilience.
