Katsina bandits levy communities with ₦20m demand on Bakori villages, sparking panic despite earlier peace agreements in the region

Residents of Garin Lamido and Yan Shuni communities in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State have been thrown into panic after bandits reportedly imposed a fresh levy of ₦10 million on each community, heightening fears of renewed attacks.

The armed group, allegedly loyal to a notorious leader identified as Isiya Kwashen Garwa, issued the demand despite previous peace agreements reached between local authorities, community leaders and representatives of armed factions operating in the area.

The development was disclosed by security analyst and crisis journalist Bakastine via his official X handle, where he expressed concern over the worsening insecurity situation affecting rural communities across the state.

According to reports, the latest demand has triggered widespread fear among residents, forcing several families to flee their homes in anticipation of possible violent reprisals.

Sources within the affected communities described the situation as deeply unsettling, noting that the recurring pattern of levies and threats has further eroded confidence in earlier peace arrangements.

Despite ongoing security operations in parts of Katsina State, armed groups are said to maintain significant influence in several rural settlements, leaving farmers and villagers increasingly vulnerable.

The situation has revived concerns over the effectiveness of so-called peace deals previously brokered in the North West, which residents say have failed to provide lasting security and instead created cycles of intimidation.

Security observers warn that continued payment of levies to armed groups could embolden criminal networks, potentially expanding their reach into more communities across the region.

Bakastine also questioned the sustainability of current security strategies, calling for stronger enforcement measures to protect vulnerable populations and restore confidence in affected areas.
