Kebbi bandit attack security strengthened as police deploy additional forces after 33 killed in Arewa Local Government Area
Kebbi State Police Command has strengthened security in communities affected by a deadly bandit attack that killed 33 residents in Arewa Local Government Area, the command confirmed in Birnin Kebbi, on February 20, 2026.
Spokesman Bashir Usman said the attack occurred on Wednesday when heavily armed men, suspected to be Lakurawa bandits, crossed into Kebbi from Gudu Local Government Area in Sokoto State, targeting cattle rustling.
The incident claimed the lives of residents in Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago, who mobilised in response to the invasion, Usman added.
In coordination with the military and other security agencies, the police have deployed additional personnel and operational assets to the affected districts.
Sustained area domination patrols are ongoing to restore order and prevent further attacks.
Usman extended condolences to the families of the victims and the wider Arewa community. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements through official channels, warning against direct engagement with armed assailants due to extreme risk.
Targeted operations are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and enhance early warning systems in vulnerable communities across Kebbi State.
Authorities emphasised the importance of collaboration between residents and security forces to prevent future attacks.
