Lagos environmental sanitation exercise warning issued as government orders residents to clean surroundings or face penalties on April 25
Lagos State Government has issued a firm warning to residents across the state to fully participate in the upcoming monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, April 25, or risk sanctions for non-compliance.
Lagos issues warning over environmental sanitation exercise was delivered by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement on Wednesday, urging residents across all five divisions to observe the cleaning exercise between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
Wahab directed residents to clean their immediate surroundings, including clearing drains in front of their homes, before resuming daily activities after the designated period.
He disclosed that the government has made comprehensive arrangements to support the exercise, including the deployment of evacuation trucks and compactor vehicles across the state to ensure swift waste removal.
According to him, the Lagos Waste Management Authority has also positioned operational teams strategically to handle waste collected during the sanitation period.
To ensure compliance, senior government officials will monitor activities across various locations in the state, with coordinated supervision from designated teams.
Wahab added that the First Lady of Lagos State, Claudiana Sanwo-Olu, alongside members of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, will lead one monitoring team, while the Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, will oversee another.
He further revealed that major transport unions have agreed to suspend operations during the sanitation window, with no vehicles expected to operate from major parks and terminals within the two-hour period.
The commissioner explained that the reintroduction of the exercise followed public calls for a structured time dedicated to environmental cleanliness across communities.
He urged Community Development Associations to mobilise residents and ensure full participation, describing the exercise as essential to restoring environmental discipline and hygiene culture in Lagos.
Wahab warned that environmental health officers and enforcement teams would be deployed across neighbourhoods to monitor compliance and take action against defaulters.
He stressed that offenders would receive abatement notices and could be prosecuted under the Lagos State Environmental Management Law of 2017.
The monthly sanitation exercise was reintroduced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in March, when he personally led a monitoring and cleaning exercise along Agege Motor Road in Mushin.
