Lagos gas explosion fire outbreak injures attendant and damages shops in Orile-Iganmu, as firefighters quickly contain the blaze

A gas explosion on Adeleye Street in the Doyin area of Orile-Iganmu, Lagos State, on Tuesday triggered a fire outbreak that left one gas attendant injured and damaged two shops in a swift but intense emergency response operation.

The fire outbreak occurred at about 12:23 p.m., according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which confirmed that its teams arrived at the scene within minutes to contain the situation.

Firefighters from the Sari Iganmu and Ajegunle fire stations were deployed immediately after the distress call, working to prevent the blaze from spreading further across the densely built-up area.

Preliminary reports indicated that the explosion happened while a gas attendant was refilling a cylinder at one of two shops located at the frontage of a partially demolished building on a half plot of land.

The blast quickly escalated into a fire that spread to a neighbouring shop within the same premises, causing significant damage before emergency responders brought it under control.

The affected attendant sustained serious injuries and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for urgent medical treatment, while no fatalities were recorded at the time of reporting.

Authorities described the incident as unfortunate but confirmed that their rapid response helped avert a potentially more devastating situation in the busy Orile-Iganmu community.

The fire service has since launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion, while urging stricter safety compliance in gas handling operations across the state.
