Lagos JOHESU suspends strike, restoring public healthcare after three months following government and Assembly talks

The Lagos State Government has commended the state chapter of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) for suspending its three-month industrial action, describing the decision as a demonstration of goodwill and collective responsibility toward safeguarding public healthcare delivery.

The strike, which disrupted services across public health facilities in Lagos, was called off following renewed dialogue between union leaders and government representatives, facilitated by mediation from the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, praised JOHESU for embracing constructive engagement.

In a statement on Sunday, he said there was consensus to sustain discussions while the union convenes its congress to formally communicate resolutions and restore normalcy across public healthcare facilities.

Ayantayo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the union’s welfare demands in line with regulations and within agreed timelines.

He emphasised the administration’s focus on equitable treatment, improved working conditions, and sustainable welfare programmes for health sector employees.

Confirming the strike suspension, JOHESU Lagos State Chairman Adelaja Gbadamosi said the decision followed assurances from state lawmakers and executive officials.

“We were given that confidence by the Speaker of the House that all our demands will be attended to, and they pleaded with us to suspend the strike, that by Monday, we are going to have a Memorandum of Understanding and an agreement. So we suspended the strike,” Gbadamosi stated.

The commissioner also acknowledged the House of Assembly’s role in facilitating dialogue and thanked Lagos residents for their patience during the strike.

He assured the public that uninterrupted access to quality healthcare services will be restored.

JOHESU said the strike was based on legitimate demands aimed at strengthening the healthcare system and ensuring fairness for all professionals.

With the suspension now in effect, focus turns to implementing the agreed terms and fully restoring services across the state’s public health institutions.
