Lagos State government joins forces to tackle plastic pollution, promoting circular economy practices and sustainable waste management
Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating plastic pollution, joining efforts led by the Community Development Advocacy Foundation during the Expanded Zero Waste Parliament forum held in the city.
Representatives from several ministries, including the Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), pledged their support for the initiative aimed at promoting sustainability and reducing waste.
Speaking at the forum, Mrs. Faderera Koko, General Manager of LASEPA, lauded the collaborative approach.
“We are delighted to witness the Expanded Zero Waste Parliament initiative taking root, uniting stakeholders from diverse sectors to promote sustainability and reduce waste across Lagos. This collective effort is vital for advancing circular economy practices, conserving natural resources, and safeguarding public health,” she said.
Yewande Obasa of the Ministry of the Environment highlighted the importance of multi-sector collaboration to ensure lasting environmental change, while the Ministry of Agriculture announced a dedicated site in Epe for a waste recycling project.
Weyinmi Okotie, Clean Air Programme Manager, drew attention to the environmental impact of organic waste, particularly vegetable refuse, which constitutes nearly half of urban waste in Lagos.
He warned that improper disposal generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas contributing about 30 per cent to global warming, and urged stakeholders to “turn off the plastic tap” to pressure producers to reduce plastic output.
The forum underscored Lagos State’s ongoing drive to strengthen waste management, promote circular economy practices, and raise public awareness on sustainable environmental practices.
