Lagos Police refutes POWA dues report, describing the publication as malicious, false, and misleading.
In a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police dismissed the Sahara Reporters article claiming that senior officers were ordered to remit ₦6,000 each as 2025 dues to the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) under the Inspector-General of Police’s wife.
Hundeyin stressed that no directive was ever given mandating such payments to the POWA President or her office.
He clarified that POWA is a non-governmental organization established to support police officers’ wives, children, and families of deceased officers.
“POWA dues are voluntary and payable only by Senior Police Officers from the rank of ASP and above, including the Commissioner of Police,” Hundeyin explained.
“These dues are paid into POWA accounts domiciled in Lagos State and expended within the State Command for the benefit of members, not to the POWA President or her office in Abuja.”
The spokesperson emphasized that the funds are dedicated to welfare programmes, empowerment for widows, and educational support for children of late officers.
Describing the publication as the work of a “morally repugnant freelancer,” the Command urged the public to disregard it completely and called on the media to avoid being used as tools for misinformation.
“The media must not allow their platforms to malign respected individuals or misrepresent institutions working hard to improve the lives of police families nationwide,” the statement concluded.
